Question:
Is it too early to start bass fishing? And what type of bait do you have the best luck with?

I live in Colorado. We went fishing today and didn't even get a bite! (It was 65 degrees today) Last summer I used crank bait and had amazing luck!! But I also didn't start until about June

I used the same bait today and had no luck at all!! Is it too early? Should I switch up my bait

I've been bass fishing Colorado for the last few years. Lure selection depends on the time of year. Right now, I'm throwing slow baits. Wacky rigged stick baits (senkos) either weightless or on a light (1/16-1/8oz) wacky jig. I'm also throwing finesse casting jigs (like a 1/4oz Bitsy Bug Jig) with a craw trailer. Small tubes, drop shot finesse rigs work too. The water is warming up quick. In the last week it went up at my local lake in Aurora from about 37-38 to 44+. You also won't find the fish in the same place right now as you did in June. In June I was throwing buzzbaits around weeds in less than 5' of water. Right now I'm throwing to 20' or more off rocky dams.

Where are you fishing? Shoot me an email, I've been getting them dialed in pretty well in CO the last year or two.

I've been avoiding answering this question because of its sheer stupidity. But now it just won't stop looking at me. Seriously, you use the SAME lure you used last year at a totally different time of year and expected to do good with it? What the hell is wrong with you? I can't imagine what was going through your head when you tied it on. My apologies for being an asshole, but c'mon! It's f*ckin' Colorado! In March! The air temp's in the 60s but it's the water temperature that matters! You should be dragging jigs and Texas-rigged worms across the bottom or working a drop shot or shakey head in one spot!

Better yet, wait until June.

Well freshwater you should use a frog lure.

saltwater you could use eel, clam belly.
