I have not used a portable one on shore, because you need to be over the water. It sends "waves" to the bottom and when they come back up to the fish finder you see where the fish are below you, because the wave bounces off the fish and not back up to the finder, just the areas around the fish. I guess it might work on a dock, but definitely not on the shore.

I have used one on a dock. You have to set the Speed very slow for a lake or pond because there is no current for the fish to swim and they don't just cruise around all the time. However, if you are on a stream or river, the fish will have more movement for you to have enough change to the screen to do any good. Otherwise, it is only really good to find the depth of the area that you are fishing.

Yes, I have one. It is basically a "bobber", you throw it out and reel it in. It broadcasts the images back to the screen.
