he needs a rod licence

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/38081.aspx

"Anyone aged 12 or over who wishes to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt and eels in England, Wales or the Border Esk region of Scotland requires a rod licence to fish with a rod and line. If you are fishing for coarse fish with three or four rods (four is the maximum allowed) then you need two licences."

Do I need a licence if I take my young child fishing?

Children younger than 12 do not need to buy a rod licence. Children aged 12 – 16 inclusive need to purchase a junior licence at £5.00. If you take a child fishing, we advise that you purchase a licence. If you are holding or helping to hold the rod you will need a licence.

A 12 year old does need a licence in the UK, they cost £5 a year until the age of 16 when an adult licence is required. These can easily be obtained from a Post Office. This allows you to use a fishing rod, but you still need the permission of the owner of the fishing rights, it could be a club, a farmer or occasionally a local council. Your local fishing tackle shop will give you all the information you require.

i'm assuming you're interior the united kingdom and that he needs to waft fish in clean water (rivers, lakes and canals). pass on your nearest address keep and get a 12 - 13 foot (3.60 - 3.ninety metre) rod. Shakespeare do a very stable selection. For a reel then get the excellent Shimano or Diawa you have got sufficient money. those will provider him properly on an identical time as he get into fishing. Your son will go with a concessonary environment organization licence to apply his fishing address (£5 consistent with annum) and likewise the permission of the owner of the fishing rights. If there's a fishing club regionally he could desire to connect that, (social golf equipment many times have fishing golf equipment).

Also remember you will need a licence if you are going to handle the rod as well.

You only have to just have your hand on the rod whilst the hook is in the water for that to be classed as fishing.

So it's far better to get one than having to pay the fine!

Sorry if you already have a licence.

But by your question I guess you don't as you would have found out the rules went you bought yours!

And What utter rot about the worse that will happen!

He might just get his rod taken away But you as the supervising person will be fined and that is expensive!

That is assuming at some time you handle the rod whilst the hook and line are in the water!

The worst that can happen to him will be his fishing rod taken away or be told not to fish. He is only 12, there's not much trouble he can get into. Its when you are 16 and older is when you can get into a lot of trouble.
