What sorts of applications would you use a baitcasting combo in? Can you use it to fish for any species? Christmas is coming up, so I'm gonna be trying to get my hands on some good **** I usually couldn't afford, haha. In fact, recommend some expensive stuff every fisherman should definitely have. Can be little things or big things. Pretend you're working at Bass Pro Shop and you're out to get a fat commission check from a sale with me. Thanks in advance.

David covered all your questions about where and what. David- very thorough answer- thumbs up. (Your brand new to the forum??- you look like your copying my answer format.)

Here are some recommendations for reels and cool equipment:

1. BPS, Pro Qualifier- (Heck, I might get one of these- inexpensive but obviously decent- with 400 PLUS good reviews!)- http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Pro-Qualifier-Baitcast-Reels/product/102287/65279#BVQAWidgetID

Why buy something like the Pro-Qualifier? You may end up hating Baitcaster's and by getting a cheaper BCer you can spend more on other fishing related stuff!

2. Abu Garcia, Revo SX- http://www.basspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Revo&153;-SX-LowProfile-Baitcast-Reel/product/100535/86106

3. Shimano, Curado- (Enuff already mentioned this one)

4. Pflueger, Patriarch- (Nice!)- http://www.basspro.com/Pflueger-Patriarch-Baitcast-Reels/product/103787/146259

5. Abu Garcia, C4- (If you need a reel that can easily translate between Carp, Cats, Pike AND Bass think about getting a round-style BC reel. Round reels can handle the transition better AND they are EXTREMELY durable- in most cases a C3 or C4 could easily last you a life-time if properly cared for.)- http://www.basspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Ambassadeur-C4-Classic-Round-Baitcast-Reels/product/74091/134463

Rods??

1. Berkley Lightnin' Rod, Shock Series- (Inexpensive but VERY good for the money)- http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-Lightning-Rod-Shock-Series-Trigger-Rods/product/104157/66533

2. BPS, Tourney Special- (Great rod! AND, as with all BPS equipment, it's easy to return if you have any issues)- http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Tourney-Special-IM7-Graphite-Rods-Trigger/product/44528/48987

3. Abu Garcia, Vendetta- http://www.basspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Vendetta-Trigger-Rods/product/10203992/51244

You can buy more expensive rods- but, in my opinion you don't "need" to. The only time you need to upgrade reels and rods is when your fishing tourneys seriously. And the upgrade isn't necessarily about the weight or how the rod fishes- it's about durability. You need VERY durable outfit's when money is on the line. Even at a "semi-pro" level the Vendetta, Tourney Special and Shock would be fine. It also depends on WHAT your using the rod/reel for. Techniques that are tough on equipment, (like Flippin/Pitchin, Froggin, heavy Jiggin) you may want to spend a bit more on those outfit's.

But, I don't think you have to worry- your not starting on a "trail". And the best part about inexpensive gear? Leaves you more money for lures, line, hooks, and misc.

Other important equipment?

1. Leatherman tool- I reach for my Leatherman tool more than any other equipment, (other than my rods/reels)- http://www.basspro.com/Leatherman-Wave-MultiTool-with-Black-Oxide-Finish/product/10224715/116127

2. A good tackle Bag- I don't have any specific brand. I just look for the right construction- LARGE zippers, water-proof bottom. And you should purchase 3 smaller "quick bags" for Spinnerbaits, Jigs, and Worms.

Other than lures and terminal tackle that's about it. Maybe a good hat.......? (lol)

Hope this helps?

"What sorts of applications would you use a baitcasting combo in? Can you use it to fish for any species?"

Yes. however, baitcasting outfits are best for slinging larger, heavier baits/lures over a distance. They give you excellent control when playing a fish, too, due to their compact dimensions. Subsequently, they are best suited to larger freshwater game fish like bass, pickerel, carp and so on.

I'm assuming you dont have a boat. Here's what every earnest fisherman needs:

- A good tackle box. I have THREE.

- A heap of lures. Google the "Top 50 Lures of All Time" and get an assortment of the top 10.

- Panfish specific lures, tackle and baits. These are the most caught fish in the the world - - get set up to catch them and you can fish anywhere.

- At least three pole/reel setups. I have baitcasting, spincasting, spinning and telescoping types, from ultralight through surf casting.

- Fishing line. 2#, 4#, 8#, 10# and 15# ought to get you going.

- Terminal tackle. You can never have too many hooks, sinkers, swivels, floats and leaders. Get them in all sizes.

- Sunglasses. Polarized, 100% UV blocking.

- Clothing. This includes hats, warm clothes, and season-appropriate foot wear.

- Fishing vest. Get one with lots of pockets.

- A good folding seat to sit on.

- A fishing backpack. This way you can leave your tackle boxes at home.

no need to spend a ton of money at BPS.

get one of the combos they offer that includes a curado reel. l think the rod they set up with the C is a bionic blade. not a particularly costly rod but it serves admirably. l have had my B blade for a few years now - and l added the curado to it myself - l didn't purchase it as a combo. a 7 footer rated for 10 to either 17 or 20 - l disremember. l'm using 10 on it with plastics and mid sized topwaters like the super spook jr. l think the full size spook is just a bit heavy. works great with a P60 pop-r or plastics with up to 3/8 oz lead.

OR the ardent XS1000. a great reel and made HERE in the U.S. again, l use 10lb mono on mine but it will handle a good braid, fine. same rod.

the combo will work fine for any bass species, walleye, pike, striper (l know, it's a true bass which the LM bass is not), light SW use as long as you keep it immaculately clean and lubed. about anything. carp and cats if you like. once you buy it, it's yours. don't let anyone say you can't use it for whatever you please. if you want to use it as a door stop, that's fine too, but a waste.

and try the sufix clear line.

properly....the superb manufacturers for freshwater purposes are extraordinarily uncomplicated..... Spinning Reels - #a million Daiwa, extra proper drags than the #2, Shimano. around Baitcast Reels - Shimano, Abu Garcia, Daiwa Low Profile Baitcast Reels - Shimano, Abu Garcia, Daiwa Rods (baitcast & spinning) (so as) - G Loomis GLX, IMX Lamiglas CertifiedPRO, G Loomis GL3, ST Croix SCIV/V St. Croix SCIII and Fenwick HMX G Loomis GL2 Lamiglas G1000 those are no longer low fee products. extreme end products can run you a great sort of money. eg. G Loomis GLX rods run interior the $4-500 variety. And Daiwa/Shimano Spinning reels can fee as much as $500 to boot.
