I know there in the same family as redfish and red snapper, and have heard that they taste good if cooked right. I've also heard from people who have never had it that they are trash fish, and taste horrible. I've caught a few, and it's a shame that they are hated so much (where I live they don't release the fish once they've caught it, they toss it on the shore to die. and usually give it a good kick to make sure it's far from the water...) because they fight hard, get big, and are just really cool fish.

Aplodinotus grunniens is supposed to be good eating.

In certain ecosystems though, excessive accumulation of lipophilic pollutants such as PCBs which are harmful to humans, some cases over 16 time EPA recommended levels. However, accumulations of mercury tend to be lower as drum do not occupy high positions in food chains.

A friend of mine likes them better than walleye. I'll stick to my walleye and crappie.
